The Woman 2011

The Woman - 2011

So stumbling across the knowledge of this movie on Fangoria I read a few reviews and suspected the worst as I generally do...

And by worst I mean something horrifically "what has been seen cannot be unseen" type of bad.

And man, was i wrong.

So here's the poop - The movie begins in the forest somewhere, a woman (clearly been out here for who knows how long) is tracking an animal. She stumbles across a cave/hole in the ground where the beast resides. She's clearly had some sort of loss due to this animal. The film leads us to believe that this animal (wolf) has killed or eaten her child. So she kills said animal and takes over the beasts home.

We cut to a fairly modern family. A Young daughter, a son who's in the middle and an older daughter. They live with both of their birth parents (!!??)and it's clear that everyone in this family is just a LITTLE bit off. The oldest daughter is in high school, and within a few minutes we learn that she's hiding something. It's so apparent her TEACHER notices. Yep, shes preggers. The son, during a scene of him at school, talks to a girl at recess (or lunch) then goes in and puts gum in her hairbrush. The youngest girl is not mentioned.

ANYWAYS - the father leaves early in the morning on a hunting trip and during his hunt he manages to spot "The Woman" and considers her to be a wild beast and MUST be tamed and taught the ways of the world. On this decision he goes back home and has the WHOLE family clean out the cellar to "get ready for something amazing"

As you can imagine, crazy town dad goes out to the woods and captures said woman. Brings her back to the house and proceeds to "Domesticate" her. And also as I'm sure you guessed, things don’t go well.

The ONE thing I didn’t understand is why the family just seemed to go along with what dad has done and said already. Cause I mean... bringing home a woman who has either clearly grown up in the wild or just gotten lost and then hit over the head out there, then chaining her up in the cellar and doing horrible things to her ... just doesn’t make any sense.. well until....

SPOILER (REALLY, DONT READ THIS TIL YOU SEE IT) - HIGHLIGHT WITH MOUSE -

Early on in the film we learn that the family has dogs in the shed, near the cellar. How many we don't find out til the end. Turns out the son, who is FUCKED UP in the brain parts, attempted to rape the woman in the cellar with a pair of pliers. The Mother has been beaten because she threatens to leave the son and father at one point (you know, after the son is found twisting off a nipple in the cellar with a pair of pliers). Which is when one of the teachers from the oldest daughter s school drops by to let the family know that shes pregnant. Which leads the father to go batshit (after JUST going batshit on mom) knocking out the teacher, and dragging her out to the freshly raped restrained woman in the cellar (of COURSE THAT happened). Yeah it got FUCKING NUTS at the end. SO - Here's what happens. They take the teacher out to the dogs - where we discover that the dog that we hadn't seen that was clearly abused at this point is in fact a HUMAN CHILD. Who promptly kills the teacher by biting her to death, then the dogs assist. Anyways while all this is going on, the older daughter has unchained the woman in the shed who is RAVENOUS for vengeance at this point. So as you can imagine, she kills the mother by eating her >>face<<, slices the son in half and rips out the heart of the father with her bare hands. Resulting in >>>>THIS<<<<< final scene with the two daughters, as she points at the older ones belly (cause shes a bad ass and knows and shit) and takes the younger one and the "dog-child" into the forest.

- END OF SPOILER -

Overall, this movie was fucking good. Angela Bettis (who is one of my favorite modern scream queens) delivers yet another stunning performance, the gore was excessive and appropriate, and the story is 98% believable, cause honestly, people can lose their shit sometimes. Watch this WHENEVER, and the ending DOES end up being happy in a way. The way this was shot, the direction the feel of the movie was all uncomfortably awkward.... but in the good way. It was a lesson for people who are stupid and think they can fuck around with nature. And it was incredibly believable... IF you enjoy seeing those who deserve to get it, GET IT, watch this one.
